Re: Odd Ship Movement

My guess: due to ice they wanted to keep the rudder straight and steer with the bow thruster. Ice can get jammed into the rudder/prop area and cause damage to the steering gear when it tries to force itself against the ice.

Re: Algoma New Builds

If they asked for Canadian bids - who would bid? There is no eastern Canadian shipyard presently able to build such a ship. Port Weller is physically large enough, but is not entertaining new construction. Davieship is in creditor protection, and not bidding. No east coast yard is large enough to bu...

Re: Morro Bay

She was due in Quebec City today - December 3. The Canso Canal closed December 1, so she probably timed her trip to go through the canal instead of going around through the Cabot Strait - much rougher!

Bill Birchglen is taking its coal cargo to Belledune, New Brunswick. That port uses a continuous ship unloader system especially built for coal, and it works at a rate of 1750 tonnes per hour. If you go to the Port of Belledune's website and go to facilities, and look under Terminal II you will see ...

Re: Ghislain and Blanc Sablon

Yes they owned Guard Mavoline. It was a converted RN naval vessel, built as a "Dance" class or "Tree" class trawler. It ended up in Mexico, renamed as Superior.

Re: Ghislain and Blanc Sablon

Thanks Jim The Kent Line agent thing is a bit odd (Irving tugs are the only tugs in Halifax these days) but I guess Algoma does not have regular agents in Halifax. Kent Line would have been their agents when they went to Saint John with salt when Sauniere was running. Algoma Tankers would likely use...
