My guess: due to ice they wanted to keep the rudder straight and steer with the bow thruster. Ice can get jammed into the rudder/prop area and cause damage to the steering gear when it tries to force itself against the ice.

She was due in Quebec City today - December 3. The Canso Canal closed December 1, so she probably timed her trip to go through the canal instead of going around through the Cabot Strait - much rougher!

McKeil barge Sault au Cochon is reported aground on Pictou Island, Nova Scotia. The tug lost control of the barge in very high winds.

In 1999 she was renamed Syra and in 2003 renamed Sera. According to Marine News of the World Ship Society, at the time of her sinking in February 2004 (no details known) she was registered under the Comoros flag, owned by Serenade Shipmanagement SA, managers: Delfi SA.

Yes they owned Guard Mavoline. It was a converted RN naval vessel, built as a "Dance" class or "Tree" class trawler. It ended up in Mexico, renamed as Superior.

Thanks Jim The Kent Line agent thing is a bit odd (Irving tugs are the only tugs in Halifax these days) but I guess Algoma does not have regular agents in Halifax. Kent Line would have been their agents when they went to Saint John with salt when Sauniere was running. Algoma Tankers would likely use...
