Re: MV Saginaw

If I’m not mistaken I believe the Steinbrenner still had the original wooden hatch covers from when built in 1901?. Maybe someone can elaborate. Cyprus? Not sure. Sept15 to may15 was CG regs when I sailed . The Cyprus sank off Deer Park MI on Oct 11, 1907 on only its 2nd trip after being launched w...

Re: Ryerson

high-carbon@2x.jpg The HBI briquet is 4" x 2" and can be used in both BOF and EAF steel making. As I mentioned earlier, I think it will be interesting to see how they are loaded and unloaded. Its not like you can drop something of that size and weight off a loading belt and free fall to t...

Re: Ryerson

If they load Ore in Superior/Two Harbors, deliver to Hamilton, head to Toledo to load HBI, take that to the Soo once it is converted to EAF, unload, then head back to Superior/Two Harbors to restart the loop. In a situation like this it would only be empty the westbound trip on Lake Erie and the We...

VTB to Dearborn

The Dirk/Michigan Trader finished their season delivering from Marquette to Cliffs Dearborn. Is this the only trip this year for VTB to that unloading port which is usually serviced by Interlake?

People will always travel to see beauty! No offense Col. Schoonmaker.
I think the Schoonmaker looks great in her original Shenango Furnace colors.

Re: ELR

ELR has large hatch openings of 54' x 20' compared to the other boats of its era like Homer, Fitzgerald and others at 48' x 11'. My understanding is that modifications are being considered but not sure what that means whether structurally or re-powering.

Re: ELR

My understanding after talking to my friend on the Sykes is that they are looking at the Ryerson to haul the HBI product being made at Ironville. The HBI ingots are 4" x 2" and not sure how they could be loaded or unloaded. BOF and EAF mills can use the HBI product and with Ironville being...

20221214_110235-1612x1209.jpg This was taken in the cargo hold of the Charles M White mid '70's. Its a diesel front loader and between the fumes and all the taconite dust it was a bit thick to breathe. No one wore masks and it was even worse when cleaning out for coal and using steel rakes to sweep...

Joseph L Block to CBT

The JLB is unloading at Cleveland Bulk Terminal after loading in Duluth. I've been following it and the Sykes for most of the year and interested in seeing how Cliffs utilizes CML. Is this the first time the Block has delivered to CBT?

Re: Stormy weather

This is where I miss the comments from Lakercapt and Capt Metz along with others of the more old time officers and Captains who no longer post here. I do know from talking with Captains and mates who I sailed with that there was more pressure in the 40's, 50's and 60's to sail in Gale force conditio...

Re: Loading Eqipment

I'm curious how flat bottom self unloaded cargo holds are cleaned between cargos. On the SU I was on we stood on deck and hosed through the hatch openings all the sides, bulkheads and slopes and it flowed down into the gates.

They are currently headed back to Burns Harbor without hitting its usual stone ports so Im guessing t...

According to Cliffs Ironville website the HBI ingots are compatible with BOF and EAF steel making plants and reduces carbon emissions. Sounds like they are positioning themselves for the future.

Ive never been one for rumors as my years on here show but talked to a friend yesterday off the Sykes and he said there is rumor circulating around Cliffs/CML about the Ryerson. They are looking at possibly modifying it to carry the HBI product coming out of Ironvile. It would remain gearless and ha...
