The Great Lakes Fleet has done a 180 on operating their ships in ice. Since the early 70's they have always prided themselves about operating in heavy ice conditions.

I see the Katmai Bay is breaking ice in the river today. In year's past, the Alder would start breaking out Duluth the second week of March. This year, ice pack of Duluth is dense, 16"-24" solid ice, with many windrows. Two Harbors is also iced in with solid ice. I would expect the Mackina...

Two more differences between them were the six built at AM Shipbuilding were the first on the lakes with a modified cruiser stern. The 10 built at GLE had knuckled elliptical sterns like the supers.

Jones Island in Milwaukee was one of the Great Lakes Fleet main layup ports, as was Duluth. Times have changed!

Once the weather gets cold in December, they stop using the gravity dock and just load at the ship loader. This is the same case in Two Harbors.

As of now, there are no layups in Duluth. All Twin Ports boats are laying up in Superior. For the first time tha I can remember, there are no active GLF boats laying up in the Twin Ports.

My grandfather sailed for USS for many years. I recall him saying he was one a new boat that developed cracking. He said they ran winch cables fore and aft to keep the cracks from growing.

In the early to late 80’s, there were many boats laid up around the lakes. Dock spaces were filled up, so they had to be resourceful on where to dock these boats and not interfere with operating docks.

According to the AIS, the PI is backed into the Arcelor Mittal mill that was former LTV mill.
