Re: Warship 25

Aren't these the same class of warships the US Navy is retiring rather early with only about 10-13 years of service due to operation shortfalls and other issues? If so, why hasn't construction stopped? The newer Freedom class ships built after the USS Little Rock had their issues mostly resolved wi...

It was built at Marinette Wisconsin and is named for that shipyard. LCS-25 is headed for Florida ultimately.

Re: Loose Keel

I have both found any documentation on "modern" ships. However, about a dozen schooners were lost when their false keel came lose or they lost one of their major keel stems either bow or stern. The keel is hard to lose as most of the frames are attached to it.

A larger Mackinac boat that may be referred to as a Huron Boat. It's a single masted fishing skiff.

This Day in History (Sam Bolten correction)

The Sam Bolten went ashore at Richmondville about 6 miles above Forester. Richmondville was wiped out completely during the fire of 1881 and was never rebuilt so the location of the loss is attributed to Delaware point or north of Forester. Richmond is in the very low part of the Thumb and is land l...

Ice damage? This more likely the cause than not. She was also in the middle of a shipping lane though I see no reports of other vessel's hitting the wreck. She was also sitting on her side on the bottom and had been righted by the salvage team. The Humphrey sank uprite not on it side and the pilot ...

Re: Pere Marquette 18 sinking cause

As with her sister ship, Milwaukee (sunk with all hands 1929) flooding occurred in the flicker (on these ferries, the very aft compartment), the engine room crew quarters. No one has been able to determine the cause of the leak. It is speculated that eventually the car deck flooded up to the coal h...

Pere Marquette 18 sinking cause

I was reading in today's history that the PM18's sinking remains unsolved. I thought she shipped water over her open stern which caused flooding in the back engine room which is why she sank stern first and was discovered at 30° angle into the bottom?

I think the Lady Elgin disaster was just one of those weird circumstances where the Augusta hit the most vulnerable area on the Lady Elgin. The seas and winds were nothing that the ships couldn't handle but with the Augusta's angle of collision piercing the hull right in-between the engine room bulk...

American Fortitude (Courtney Burton) scrapping

Has it came to light why the Burton was scrapped? I've read repeatedly in other threads of not underestimating the worth of Jones Act compliant hulls, but yet they have certainly scrapped quite a few over the last 20 years. I was wondering if there was a major issue that led to her demise. The good ...

Re: Cleveland Cliff offers to buy USS

Wasn't Cliffs a subsidiary of US Steel at one point? I thought 90% of the domestic steel industry owned by US steel until 1911ish?

As I recall Lackawana was one of the few independent steel manufacturers in the 1910s and 20s.

Re: Flying Bridge Great Lakes Freighters

None of the 1913 boats had enclosed flying bridges. The flybridge was always meant for the crew and was used in all weather. During the summer or hot days the flybridge was the place to be. In foul weather (read the L.C. Waldo's crew on the flybridge during the 1913 storm) the flybridge was the only...

The Red Wing seemed to have been a bit young to go to the scrapyard when she did at 27 years old. Is there a reason why she was scrapped so early?

Re: Old Photos Detroit waterfront

The Success was a cargo vessel built in the 1840s that was converted for use to transport convicts to the British penal colony of Australia. It made two voyages transporting them and then was converted back to cargo use. Somehow it stayed afloat and profitable in an era where steam replaced sail and...
