One of the 3 held the record for Soo-Superior run until the VICTORY stole it later on. Either the PATTON or GIRDLER had a steam Triple-Chime whistle on the stack that belonged to her Chief Engineer. Yes they were speedsters alright @10,000 shp. I’m just waiting for the pic to show up here one of the...

Re: Coal Bunkers

Coal supply level was easily ascertained in the main bunker by peering down into the bunker by way of the lo...

On the majority of the straight-deckers only the last cargo hold was fitted with pump out boxes ( Rose Boxes) . 2 located in both aft corners where pumps in the engine room would de-water the hold. Also in reverse they occasionally flooded the hold for “extra” ballast to “get her down” during the ba...

Re: Today in Great Lakes History - Story about the Ashland
The culprit to the power outage was an Emergency Shut Down Breakglass switch for the Fuel Pump. The glass actually cracked and allowed the switch to “barely” disconnect thus shutting down the fuel pumps for both boilers. This took hours to troubleshoot and finally remedy repairs to the switch and al...

Some of the turn of the century images of the Lakers are fantastic and quite clear. I’ve rarely seen any images of below decks ( machinery spaces) published. Anyone know is a source to view these rare images?

Re: John Sherwin Trade Routes
Back "in the day" both the SHERWIN and the BEEGHLY ran loads steady into Ashtabula. Seemed they owned that port even during winter lay-up where many of Interlake S.S Co. vessels were berthed undergoing winter repairs. Up town they even dominated the local gin mill called The Iroqouis, wher...

She was hardly out of the builder's yard and suffered a relatively serious casualty at Groh Cap. Another story comes to mind of an earlier ore carrier of the same name that sunk west of the Mackinac Bridge due to a collision, sank in 75 ft of water and was successfully salvaged and repaired / return...

Re: Unloading Boom Question
Unloading booms are usually of two construction methods, the older being of angle iron fabrication and the newer being of steel tubing. Designers/Shipyards can erect whatever the customer wants per vessel needs. That 40 year old boom is a good as new, load tests are performed periodically and inspec...
