Re: Homer/Fitzgerald pilot house

I didn't realize those were crow's nests on the masts, I always assumed they were just safety platforms with railings to assist in the servicing of mast lights and radar components. That's what they are there for not crows nests. And look outs were not long gone in the 70's. I spent many a watch on...

Re: Republic Steel C4s

I sailed on the C-4 Charles M White with Cliffs in the mid to late 70"s. The only time we delivered to Republic Steel up the Cuyahoga was immediately after the '77 Miners Strike. On one trip we went to Lorain and off loaded 2500 tons to get to the needed draft of 22' to go up the Cuyahoga and t...

Re: Wilfred Sykes

Anyone know the whereabouts of the Sykes? Haven't seen it on the AIS in the past few days. The last I had seen it was in Cleveland. After completing 3 shuttles from CBT to Cliffs up the Cuyahoga the Sykes went to Calcite for a partial load and topped the he split load off at Port Dolomite on 4/9. T...

Re: 2023 Fit-Out

Companies arent going to fit out ships just to have them sit on the hook or wait out weather. Unlike most years when heavy spring ice is the culprit, this year it is the heavy winds. Things have been backed up at Duluth/Superior for well over a week now and the stone ports are just starting to open ...

Re: Bum Boat

If I remember correctly Bum Boats operated in Cleveland on the Cuyahoga, I believe in Conneaut and Ashtabula and obviously Toledo and Duluth/Superior. As an 18 yr old deck hand it was quite an experience. I bought several Dwight Boyer books, toiletry items, sipped a 3.2 beer on board and especially ...

Re: CML Season Start

Jon Paul, do you know what the Wilfred Sykes loaded at Burns Harbor? Was it millscale? Thanks, - Brian I'm not sure but I'm guessing fines. The Sykes spent a lot of time shuttling between IH and BH last season and I'm sure there was lots of broken pellets. Coke for middle dock. Thanks for the updat...

Object Shot Down Over Lake Huron

I find it more than a bit interesting that 24 hrs after the unidentified object was shot down over Lake Huron that the 2 USCG cutters on Lake Huron, Hollyhock and Mackinaw are at their respective moorings and the only vessel on the open lake is CCG Griffon? One would think that even if it went down ...

DRI (B) as another poster said is nasty stuff. It can react with water and air to produce hydrogen and heat. It can then self combust. Oxygen in enclosed spaces can be depleted. You can read all the regulations that come with shipping DRI (B): https://cargohandbook.com/Direct_Reduced_Iron_(DRI) HBI...
