Lake Michigan Gale/Storm Warnings

South Gale Warnings along with scattered Thunder Storms will transition over the next day to Storm Warnings on Saturday. Starting with SE winds at 50kn it will swing SW with gusts 55kn + and waves building to 20' - 25' through Sunday morning. It seems a bit reminiscent of the Bradley Storm with the ...

Re: American Spirit at Algoma

The AS is repeating the same course down bound for Algoma/Soo. They are averaging 7-8 knots and taking the longer route by passing between Keweenaw Point and Manitou Island and heading for the south shore instead of directly for Whitefish Point.

Re: Roger blough activity

I watched the Blough tow pass east bound under the Mackinac Bridge yesterday with mixed emotions. I reflected on how I had seen its maiden voyage, visited my friend Swede Wallin on board a few times when we were both unloading in Conneaut and watching it in convoys during the Winter Navigation Progr...

Re: American Spirit at Algoma

According to their AIS on Marine Traffic, they are not headed to Marquette to load for Toledo and the Torco Dock! It shows them rather headed to Superior BNSF #5 Dock and due there on October 22, of course subject to change with orders but for now it shows that. I noticed the course and AIS change....

Re: American Spirit at Algoma

I do find it interesting how the AS is used in some unique roles for a footer however. They've hauled limestone several times this season, been to Algoma and now are heading back to Marquette for another load of Tilden pellets I assume for Toledo Torco again. Of all the footers they have been the mo...

American Spirit at Algoma

The American Spirit is unloading at Algoma Steel in Sault Ontario after loading in Two Harbors. Have any other footers ever unloaded there?

Lake Superior Storm Warning

Lake Superior is currently under Gale Warnings from the North that will become Storm Warnings later tonight with North winds 55+ with higher gusts and wave heights over 30+ feet. The Witch has come early this year along with heavy snow possibly a foot or more in the west central UP. It brings back m...

If North Shore in Silver Bay is on hiatus and only shipping off the stockpile where are the new silica pellets made? The Joe Block just loaded in SB and is also headed to Ironville

Re: Heavy Weather Question

I think that company pressure was more of an issue before the 1970's. Starting with the Henry Stienbrenner loss in '53 followed by the Bradley in '58 and then the Morrell , the industry as a whole started to think differently about a ships condition and venturing out in heavy weather.

The Victory/Maumee, Manitoulin and Michipicotin have delivered pellets there with the Victory being on a pretty steady run from Superior

Re: Wilfred Sykes

I'm trying to figure that out too. Neither boatnerd ais or Marine Traffic showed the Sykes as they entered Toledo. I don't believe it was Torco Dock as usually those are Tilden pellets from Mat and Silver Bay loads go to Ironville

Re: Wilfred Sykes

The throw back to Inland Steel was my first thought but that red is the same color as the big red C that Cliffs used so it may have a dual purpose lol

After watching the Sykes pass eastbound under the Mackinac Bridge yesterday I noticed that the Cliffs/CML stack now has the red band on the top again, When did the change take place.

North Shore Mining

Is North shore mining still processing pellets at Silver Bay? Both the Joyce/GLT and the Dirk/MT have back hauled stone from Stoneport to Silver Bay on their last trips and then pellets to Ironville.
I was under the impression that the plant was not producing anymore or in limited status.
TIA

Re: Wilfred Sykes

A self unloader like the Sykes can put the pellets right on the dock where needed in BH unlike trains can.

Re: Roger Blough future

I still believe unless the aft end damage is too extensive to repair or replace that the Blough will not go for scrap. Over the next 5 years I think we will see some attrition in the fleets as older more heavily used boats i.e. Galloway and others head to the scrap yard. As I mentioned before, even ...

Thank you for the replies. I had seen it at the MWT dock on AIS and wasn't sure. Its been very interesting to see how Cliffs have been using CML in different trading patterns.

The Wilfred Sykes left Cleveland on this last trip and then departed for Toledo. Did they backhaul a cargo there?
