Re: Escanaba Ore Dock
Not sure if it used the same piling or new ones, but yes, it was built on the footprint of C&NW ore dock No. 6. Here is a portion of a 1910 nautical chart showing the location of the existing 8 chute style docks (6 C&NW, 2 MILW) at that time in Escanaba and North Escanaba.

The information reported on the news page appears to have been based on a Facebook post by GRERL. That may have been initiated by this Fox Weather interview with one of the researchers: https://www.fox2detroit.com/news/new-buoys-in-great-lakes-will-remain-all-winter-provide-novel-data-on-ice-and-fis...

Re: hiding from Superior gales ?
Opps ........ an earlier post slipped accross the "enter" buttons ...... About the K Barker; She loaded in Marquette then headed NW to ride it out in the lee of the Keweenaw in Bete Grise. The question is; why wouldnt she lay in the shelter of the lower harbor, and save herself the severa...

Re: reduced posting
It doesn't help this place that there was a bunch of stuff on the old boatnerd site (pics.boatnerd.com) that was apparently tossed without any effort to save it - there were some good and rare shots in there. No, the internet archive did not pick up most of it either. In regards to the former Boatn...

After so much frustration and hair pulling, I have uploaded the diagram of cabins for the BayShip thousand footers (as built) to my website: https://www.goldenhorseshoewx.ca/images2/Burns_Harbor_Cabins.jpg Thanks. There is something about that particular file that this system just doesn't like. I t...

They applied for (and apparently received) a short-term coastal trading license for the vessel. I don't think that requires a Canadian crew. License applies from "on or about" September 1 through "on or about" October 31, 2023.

And the bidding has begun. A private company Esmark offered half a billion more, and more potential purchasers are apparently in discussions as well:

Re: freighter transit times
Recent editions of the annual Know Your Ships publication have about 4 pages of such information.
In addition Boatnerd's AIS system (and many others) have ETA features that give estimated times of arrival for ships out in the open lakes. It assumes they maintain their current speed.

Re: tug Seaway Guardian
Since my initial post, I did find this photo online of the tug on land. Taken by Nathan Jarvis on Sept 5, 2019. It does show anodes in numerous places on the outside of the cort nozzles, as well as on the hull. So there likely was a concern about one being "ingested" into the prop. But I'm...

tug Seaway Guardian
In an article in Professional Mariner's " American Tugboat Review 2023 " it mentions that the Seaway Guardian, which was delivered in 2020 was taken out of service late last year because "a zinc anode loosened, causing an automatic port side engine shutdown". I'm curious how the ...

Re: mv samuel champlain
The vessel was built in the US for Norwegian owners. It spent the first part of its life sailing under Norwegian and Italian flags. Then it suffered a major fire which pretty much gutted the vessel. McKeil bought it and I'm pretty certain placed it in Canadian registry. But before they could work it...

Re: escanaba, michigan
North Shore Marine Terminal and Logistics (the former Basic Marine shipyard) has a 160' by 65' floating drydock in Escanaba. It was initially built by the Upper Peninsula Shipbuilding Company in the late 1970's and has been in Escanaba since the late 1980's I believe. I think it was obtained when We...

Re: Midwest Terminal - Toledo
I too have heard that they ship out petroleum coke. The US Army Corps of Engineers shows that 271,000 tons of petcoke was shipped out of Toledo in 2020, but it doesn't list which dock. Some of that petcoke likely comes from the nearby refineries, but I read somewhere that much of it is coming from M...

Re: Cuyahoga
The tugs Ecosse and Stormont are both in Kingsville and both passed nearby the Cuyahoga on their way to that port. So I suspect that they are there for a tow. But I wonder if they might be waiting on weather or sea conditions. Weather buoys were showing 5-6 foot wave heights in the main basin of Lak...
