Re: Cuyahoga
The tugs Ecosse and Stormont are both in Kingsville and both passed nearby the Cuyahoga on their way to that port. So I suspect that they are there for a tow. But I wonder if they might be waiting on weather or sea conditions. Weather buoys were showing 5-6 foot wave heights in the main basin of Lak...

Re: ss badger
I didn't realize the Badger was going to be repowered with diesel engines! Unless I have missed something, Interlake is still investigating how they will repower the vessel. They did announce that they will be moving away from coal as a fuel. Diesel is one viable option, but I think they are still ...

Denny As of 12:15 am EDT on Wednesday, the Molly M1 is showing up on both the Boatnerd and Marine Traffic AIS sites. (as an unidentified tug on Marine Traffic for now). It is moving southward at about 6 knots. Using the Boatnerd ETA estimator, (which assumes it maintains its current speed) it may ge...

This previous thread had some information on coal docks at Lorain, as well as a couple of photo links https://search.boatnerd.com/viewtopic.php?p=231621&hilit=lorain+coal+dock&sid=e7a1d85f2e6bf20b4778987a60dc1142#p231621 Also, this page on Bowling Green's website has lots of photos of docks ...

Hollyhock working the Seaway
Based on AIS data, it appears that the buoy tender Hollyhock has been working buoys and aids to navigation for the past couple of days in the US portion of the Seaway. Working out of Massena, NY. I'm curious why the Seaway Authority isn't doing this work themselves? I realize they were having issues...

Tugboat status
I'm curious if anyone has any updates on two tugs that made the news back in January. First, a (assuming it was small) tug was lost in Conneaut when a work barge capsized. Was the tug ever located? There were fears that it may still be afloat, possibly also capsized, somewhere on Lake Erie. Second, ...

Re: Scrapyards before Port Colburn
Interesting question. Not sure about before 1970, but here are a few scrappers mentioned in old editions of the Toronto Marine Historical Society's Scanner from the 1970's and 1980's: United Steel and Refining Co, Hamilton Newman Steel, Port Maitland Western Metals Corp, Thunder Bay Affiliated Marin...

Hopefully just an AIS glitch. AIS systems frequently transmit incorrect headings when a ships velocity is zero.

Re: Little Current Ontario
From various mines on the Marquette Range. Predecessors of the Duluth South Shore and Atlantic Railway built the docks and eventually had a direct rail route from the mines to St. Ignace. They hoped that much longer shipping season available at St. Ignace (back then the Soo Locks operated roughly 7 ...

Re: Coal Bunkers
Thanks for the interesting information. Has a ship ever run out of bunkers (oil or coal) and required refueling away from a fuel dock? Railroad ferries bunkered directly from railroad hopper cars via grates under the tracks on the car deck. George Hilton's book The Great Lakes Car Ferries documents...

Re: Ryerson
Hauling HBI by truck has to be pretty expensive considering a vehicle can only haul at most around 60,000 pounds, or 30 tons, of cargo. As an aside, basically double that for trucks headed to Michigan. Lucas County and two other counties in Ohio allow Michigan -legal trucks to use specific routes. ...

Rum Tankers
Years ago there used to be at least one tanker (the Jo Spirit) that brought bulk rum from the Caribbean to Canada. Do any tankers still bring bulk rum into Canada, or have they been replaced with other means of transport, like intermodal containers? Thanks.

Re: Ryerson
is the hbi plant in toledo up and running? I believe it began commercial production around January 2021. To my knowledge I don't think the Toledo HBI plant was designed to ship product out by water. It was designed to load trucks and rail cars. So I think that for the shipments that they have sent ...

Re: Brevort still open and shipping
Denny,
Unless something has changed very recently, Sand Products Corp of Muskegon owns the property, the dock and the adjacent sand pit. They are the ones that ship sand.
Graymont built and I assume owns the limestone loading equipment at Brevort. I don't know how much limestone is loaded vs sand.

Here is a timeline that Algoma put out a while ago for the phase in of the two new electric arc furnaces. As of last August, they said they were on schedule. EAF's scheduled to come online in early or mid 2024, with Blast Furnace #7 staying in production into 2026. They also made an agreement with a...
