My starting to be a sailor

As many members will know I wrote tales of my life as a sailor on this Webb sight and this was well read by many. I initially was going to make it available in book form but the world as we once knew it has changed dramatically with the coronavirus. Instead, I have edited the post and added addition...

Re: Grain ship aft superstructure fire on Lake Superior 1970

These ships by far had the absolute worst accommodations ever seen on a so called modern ship on the lakes, the Master came from one of the modern for and aft 730s in the hall fleet we always wondered who he ticked off to get stuck on one of these. I agree 100% with this as I sailed on these appari...

Re: Salty Lake Ontario Long Delay

If a vessel is on a charter party there will be many clauses covering all eventualities. One will be when the cargo is ready. At the arrival port, the captain will tender his notice of readiness (N.O.R.) to indicate the vessel is in all ways ready to load cargo. If the chartered accepts this the ves...

Re: Lakercapt

My regular boat was the Saskatchewan Pioneer and I was there for the completion of construction and except for a short relieving on the Canada Marquis and Selkirk Settler was there for nearly eight years and then an Indian crewed her. They to answer your question were all the same handling and my fa...

4th July.

To all our Americain friends south of the 48th parallel and not to forget Alaska and Hawaii I extend my heartiest best wishes on this your special day.
You will not be able to celebrate in the usual fashion but as a very resourceful nation, I am certain you will still whoop it up in style.

I hope not as the regulations require "one long blast at intervals not to exceed two minutes"

Re: Desgagnes Vessel Reflags in 2020

I would be interested to hear about any Canadian company that trades internationally while flying the Canadian flag. I don't believe any Canadian company does so nowadays. Not sure I get the point about subsidized Canadian ships. NEAS and Desgagnes have needed coasting licenses in past years to bri...

Re: Vessel sinking

Lakercapt, could you please explain the 'running a wire' procedure for us landlubbers? I have an idea of how it would be done - but won't embarrass myself by spelling it out, in case I am wrong! :–) My wife is correct in that I would never have made a good teacher as I always assume knowledge when ...

Re: Desgagnes Vessel Reflags in 2020

[quote="Mac Mackay"]I am amused by the statement "purely financial reasons". They could never find any work overseas in the off season if they remained in Canadian registry. I do not think you are correct in this statement as others have traded internationally with Canadian crews...

Re: Desgagnes Vessel Reflags in 2020

The reason they are re-lagged Canadian is so they can take part in the Arctic replenishing in the next few weeks when they will carry cargo to the remote settlements.
Purely financial reasons.

Re: Re-flagging

Having been through this process I can tell you it was not a pleasant experience. The vessel was changed from Canadian Registry to the Isle Of Man and except initially all the Canadian crew was paid off and transported back to Canada. The new crew were a mixed bunch and were supplied by a crewing ag...

Vessel sinking

I have often been asked if there were times you feared for the safety of the vessel and I have to answer that with a yes. On both occasions, I was afraid the boat was going to sink was not in the middle of the ocean in raging seas or battling a hurricane. No, it was when we were alongside a dock dis...

Re: Canadian Non-Self Unloaders

During the latter part of the ore unloading the deck, crew would go down the hold and sweep or shovel the last few pellets and dust into the clam bucket. When after washing out for the next cargo of grain we once used grain dust to dry up the last puddles but this was stopped when it was discovered ...

Re: My starting to be a sailor

A company has offered to publish this book if I sign a contract that is as involved and covered by many clauses. Reminds me of the Baltic Exchange ship charter party. It will not be cheap and I have to put the sum upfront. My thoughts are is it worth my while??? or is this just an ego trip.

Re: My starting to be a sailor

A quick update to the revising of my stories. My wife is a fastidious taskmaster and there have been 100 pages we have done so far (the text is New Times Roman at 12) so this is lots of writing. Maybe I should have let her read the posts prior to initially and saved these corrections ! I will keep y...

Re: My starting to be a sailor

Back to my days on a self unloader, the Algorail. We were to proceed to Thunder Bay to load a cargo of potash for Toledo. It was a trial load to be shipped from the old CN ore dock. This was to be the first on many to unitize the old facility if successful. I did not know it but too much handling or...

My starting to be a sailor

Some months ago I posted the last installment to the series of posts I made.
Since this time I have had to chance to edit, amend and add to these stores.
I wonder if the members would like this complete revision to peruse.
I may wish t publish should there be sufficient interest.

Re: Depot Harbour Ore Dock

On the Algorail we loaded the last ore out of little Current. It had been lying on the dock for years prior to loading. It was all that was left from a thriving industry.
