Re: Mckeil Towboat

Thanks Mr. Mackay and Mr. Lafferty for the additional information and confirming the time frame when the tug went to McKeil. Here is a 1980's postcard from Detroit (publisher unknown) which I believe shows the pilothouse of the same tug. From what I understand, the Windsor-Detroit Barge Line loaded ...

Re: Mckeil Towboat

Mr. Lafferty, I'm sure I speak for many when I say thanks for the impeccable information you provide, often on some of the most obscure vessels out there. With that said, I do wonder if that 1997 date for the McNeil purchase might be a typo? Windsor-Detroit Barge Lines stopped operating in the early...

Muskegon Harbor on 12/28/2014

Uploaded some photos from Muskegon to the public gallery. It was a nice enjoyable day until I hit a wild turkey on the way home. The poor bird never knew what hit him, but now I get to shop around for a new grille and bumper. (both of which were just replaced a few months ago after hitting a deer.) ...

Re: HHL Mississippi questions

Pure speculation on my part, but perhaps they rented or leased the spreader bars, rather than bringing some from overseas. Barnhart Crane and Rigging is a Memphis- based company, but they have locations across the United States. Their Chicago location is in Channahon, Il (sw of Joliet) and has barge...

Re: Tug boat parade or race? Where is one?

The three annual ones I know of aren't very close to Wisconsin. All three have websites, although no dates posted for 2015 yet. Detroit/Windsor, usually in late June: http://www.tugrace.com/ Soo Ontario/Michigan, also usually in late June: http://www.ssm.thegreattugboatrace.ca/Home.php Georgian Bay ...

Re: PC tugs & barges

Correct. But the barge Cleveland Rocks has not been used since 2012. Laid up in Muskegon. There were some plastic tarps over the holds, I suspect so they could work on them, but I have never seen any activity around the barge.

Re: Prequel isle

The USS Lake Erie Works at Nanticoke does have coke ovens. However they were idled in April 2013 during that lockout and weren't reactivated until October 2014 due to a glut of coke on the market and large stockpiles at Nanticoke. A CBC article stated that the coke ovens there can typically supply a...

Re: Igloo shaped bulk storage building, Gateway Metroport

It involves a tax abatement, so there is some information online. http://www.bizjournals.com/buffalo/news/2014/01/29/big-ditch-ams-and-north-american-salt.html?page=all http://www.ecidany.com/app/file/217 The minutes for the public hearing show that it lasted 15 minutes or less and that the only two...

Re: Case 80 Christmas Train

About 10 or 12 years ago I followed it from Howell to Lake Odessa, Michigan in the middle of the night. Even though they just transit across Michigan and don't make any stops, they kept every light on. It was an amazing, festive sight. Of course now they transit the former Wabash and not the old Per...

Re: Tug location

I show that it arrived in Toronto on December 2 or 3, 2013.

The only time I saw it show up on AIS this year was around the end of July when it showed up for a day or two moving around just outside the harbor. It didn't look like it left, but I have not seen it on AIS since.

Re: List of scrapped ships

I'd add the MV Miner ( Canadian Miner ) to that list, even though it is being scrapped under rather unique and difficult conditions. And the Kathryn Spirit was still 95% intact when I last saw her in October 2013. A little bit of cutting had been done on the starboard bow, but that effort had long b...

Salty Sundaisy E

Anyone know if the salty Sundaisy E lost power or had some sort of mechanical problem downstream of Trois Rivieres yesterday? Her AIS track shows her veering to starboard just upstream of Batiscan and then stopping for about 11 hours. She is now downstream of Batiscan with the tugs Ocean Bravo and O...
