Re: Long Ships Passing
it was interesting seeing the earlier versions of "container ships" in the video. How long did they sail on the lakes?

Cottages or cabins for rent - St. Mary's River
Greetings all. I've been having fun with Google Earth and looking at cabin/cottage sites all along the St. Mary's River. One looked interesting on South Point Road north of Raber (Might be Goetzville). It has 6 cabins and a small private marina. It is near the point that is closest to the shipping l...

Re: Communicating with the ships
Interesting comment on the requirement for a Canadian license for pleasure craft to use VHF radios. I (American) have called Canadian docks or locks using my VHF numerous times in the past. Would that actually require a license?

Alouette Spirit
The Alouette Spirit went upriver in Toledo to the ADM grain elevators. I don't think I have ever seen this barge up here. She seems to have a normal route to the Midwest terminal hauling aluminum ingots. Anyone have an idea if she is just going to temporary layup or actually hauling grain?

Re: 2/27/2020 Great Lakes Storms
Adding to "Guest"s comments on Lake Erie, having boated (recreational) on all five Great Lakes, the short, compact and tighter waves on Lake Erie are quite different from all other Great Lakes. They pack a lot of energy, are often from multiple directions and of intermittent frequency (Con...

Re: ECDIS on Great Lakes ships
Somewhat related, I was making our way across Lake Erie at dusk/night many years ago when the chartplotter on our boat went out. Thankfully I had a book of charts and with a handheld compass was able to take bearings to known landmarks (lighted towers, etc.) to triangulate our location and provide a...

Question for those in the know: What is the breakdown in costs per hour of the operation of the vessel (fuel, maintenance, etc.) to crew cost?

Probably four ships in Toledo heading to the scrap yard: Sarah Spence, American Valor, Manistee, and possibly the St. Clair although that is just wild speculation on my part.

Re: Sarah Spencer
What does NQFC mean? Sorry - inside joke from "the old days" on the page. After having a few boatnerd friends out for a cruise on my boat, one asked "What color is this? It's not quite fuschia." Hence the Not Quite Fuschia Colored (NQFC) Carver. If goes along with "The Fier...

Sarah Spencer
Cruised our beloved NQFC Carver to her winter port for the year. We noticed lights on and open doors on the pilot house of the Sarah Spencer. She had a ladder over the side to shore. Any word on what may be happening?

Re: 1000 footer/Duluth question
A boat with twin screws is more maneuverable than a single. One engine ahead and one in reverse with bring the bow around nicely with the proper throttle application Question for those in the know and with experience. On my twin engine boat, I can do exactly as Jon Paul noted - work the shifters an...

Re: Record Tonnage through the Soo
I think since the Indiana Harbor had to spend some time last week waiting for water levels to come up, I don't think you will see them loading that deep. That's right. A few extra tons to set a record are completely negated by spending half a day at anchor waiting for sufficient depth. Do that a fe...

Re: What to my wondering eyes..
Thanks for the reply Bookworm. It is challenging as a boater to see shore-posted signs in a wide river. I boat on the Maumee River which has two posted "river-wide" no-wake zone between two bridges in the downtown Toledo area, and upriver near Perrysburg and Maumee posted by No Wake buoys....

Re: What to my wondering eyes..
I am curious about the speed limits on the river. Are there posted "No Wake" zones for pleasure craft? Many pleasure craft will actually throw out a larger wake when "plowing" at moderate speeds than "planning" at higher speeds.
