CAI Day
We missed discussing CAI Day on Saturday. I was able to do some work on the NQFC Carver in celebration of the 20 cylinders contained within her internal combustion engines; driving up to her in the V-8 powered Chevy pickup, and firing up a single cylinder gas powered power washer... all after trimmi...

Rand Logistics study
Interesting to see Rand considering financials for a sixth US flagged SU. Any thoughts as to which vessel they may be considering?

Re: Conveyor Belt at the Soo
Does anyone have an approximate amount of cargo transited through the Poe Lock for an average year. The question beyond the time considerations should also consider the operational and maintenance costs of running ships through a lock versus material over conveyors for similar tonnage. I would bet t...

Re: Ralph Misener Conflow unloading system
Has any engineer ever revisited the theory behind this system for modern application? I've often thought of the Ryerson or other straight deckers being converted to a SU in an "above the deck" application. Perhaps multiple, smaller units to cover more hatches at once to increase offload ca...

A very, very happy retirement to Anders Rasmussen. You may have wrapped up on the Kam, but to so many Boatnerds you will always be Captain of the Coolbeans!! Congrats to both Anders and Donna!

Vacation rental on Harsens Island
Fellow Boatnerds. I have my family talked back in to a boat-watching vacation for next summer. After hitting the St. Mary's River in Barbeau for decades, we are looking at something a little closer to home. I am thinking of something on Harsen's Island. We need a dock for our boat (either the NQFC C...

Re: Whitefish Bay Question
Interesting question. Same would apply for Green Bay to Lake Michigan, Georgian Bay for Lake Huron, and Maumee Bay for Lake Erie. Probably quite a few others as well but that is what is on the top of my head.

What was her BHP before conversion? I think I read 6,250 BHP after. I would imagine the reduction gearbox would affect shaft horsepower.

Rideau Canal
Thanks to Paul Beesley for the Rideau Canal photos. That trip along with the Trent-Severn Waterway is on my "bucket-list" of vacation trips. Paul, how was the houseboat? We have debated whether we would trailer our jet boat and camp out, cruise the NQFC Carver over, or just rent a houseboat.

Sitting on the wall
Finally got a free night to cruise up the Maumee River. I knew of some of the wall-sitters: St. Clair, American Valor, Sarah Spencer, Manistee. I was surprised to see the American Century at Midstate Terminal with little activity. Is she just sitting out for a short period?

Coming to a Great Lakes port near you??
No, we are not going to see container ships sailing into Toledo, Duluth or anywhere else soon, but the naval architecture concept is interesting.

Great job Rob! Ahead of the game but don't let it catch up with you.
ML - I think you have the perfect way of catching up. Have your wife call my wife. She'll talk her into it.

Twins with a generator can really bump up that count. I get 20 just from the NQFC Carver.Guest wrote:I'm still at 24...maybe it is time to head to the boat dealership.

CAI Day is almost upon us again. Time to pay tribute to the amazing contributions to society of the internal combustion engine. Count up all the cylinders in functioning engines across your household. Your count needs to at least equal but preferably exceed the age of the most senior person in the h...

Re: Life is short
We just met last weekend for our Toledo port tour (Compliments of Joe Cappel from the Port Authority!) Dave Edwards did not make it this year but we did get a nice Porta-Potty picture for him. Quite a busy layup year for Toledo. The fiery redheaded Carver mechanic is doing well and anxious to climb ...

Re: Life is short
The "CCL" is the "Carrot Cake Lady" as previously discussed. In addition to wishing to water ski behind the Stinson, we thought she should warm up skiing behind my 32' "Not Quite Fuscia Colored" Carver (a nice way of saying faded red paint). Trenary Toast was a favorite...

Re: Life is short
The CCL made it around. Whether it was water-skiing behind the Stinson, or smuggling Trenary Toast with the aid of my NQFC Carver, she always knew where her phone book was, and to "hold the nuts" on the carrot cake. Michigan Bob was counting trees at the Soo visitors center, and Christmas ...

Sitting in Packo's with some of my fellow Boatnerds from across Ohio and Michigan before we tour the Toledo docks....
