Re: William Clay Ford (1)

I am still curious in why the Homer was not laid up like the Sherwin. She was quite a large vessel with some great tonnage. It's cheap to lay up vessel, and no matter how bad steel crashed, they should have known that it would come back and ore is not the only cargo available.

Re: Wilhelm Gustloff

I think that is due in part of it being a vessel that was owned by Nazi Germany and the people who lost their lives were considered nazis. The Soviet commander who sank her even got a medal for it. It's a tragic loss, but due to her nationality many people don't know or care

I would say past the 1950's. There seems to be a decline in traditional boats in the 1960s.

First aft cabin laker

What was the first modern aft cabin designed laker? I know that the rabbit boat design was dabbled with but never took off.

Re: Sunken Railcars

The Pullman car is still in good shape. The gilded windows and ceiling is still intact, but no one has really gone inside to look. We are afraid that our bubbles will deteriorate the ceiling and cause the thing to collapse. Something that you do not want to have happen in 290ft of water. We tried ge...

We are still 1/3 larger than the Chinese. Both in GDP and PPP, and by far in GNP (china will never reach our level. I also see that most of trading ships are based out of Carribean nations for tax purposes. Meaning that the way the govt taxes the companies must be ridiculous enough to register them ...

Re: Jones act

Some countries still use the Liberty ships that were built in WWII. So American and British vessels show their quality. How many non Asian and south American countries can say the same? 191 deep water ships sounds very low since we are the largest economy in the world.

Re: Jones act

What is really painful is that at one time the US had close to 40% of all the worlds trade ships along with the largest merchant fleet the world has ever seen. Now this one person is trying to annihilate whatever toehold we have in this industry. The US and the UK have built the best ships to ever s...

Re: Sunken Railcars

Paul Ehorn found a few railcars around the area, but I believe most of them do lie with the wreck meaning that she sank quickly enough that they only got a few off before she went down. Paul is looking for the PM 18, so there should be a trail in and around, but you don't follow a trail to a wreck, ...

Re: john sherwin

When I was on that river I did not see her prop. I also saw missing portholes and windows on the starboard side. I doubt she will sail again. Ships like the Homer and other newer build straight deckers should have been in long term layup instead of scrapped and how the Sherwin escaped is beyond me.

Re: Marine Museum of the Great Lakes Kingston Threatened

The article did say that the museum did not attract much attention or visitors for that matter. Most of the items would probably end up in a larger museum or end up in private collections. I would say the Canadian Govt has more stringent laws for protecting it's history than the US does.

How many ships do we build a year for commercial purposes? I know we have not built a new laker since the late 80's. It seems the only things we build are warships, barges, and tugs.

My mistake, one of them is called the the Mapledawn that is sunk in Georgian Bay with an orphaned bow section that sank in Lake Erie or Onatrio. Was it the Manolia?

Re: Oversize Ships Built on Lakes During WWII.

A good example of this would be the Merida that was cut in 2 and the bow half sank on Lake Erie with a loss of nine lives. The stern section was rebuilt and served during the war and then cut in half again after. The stern was paired up with a lakes bow and eventually sank in Georgian Bay.

Re: Griffen Found?

The story itself raises my suspicions. For one the Confederates did not have any gold to stash or spend as it was. They relied on paper money and foreign bonds, raising a massive doubt on there being in a railcar in Lake Michigan. Second, where are the cannons, hardware, one of a kind anchors, stern...

Re: Griffen Found?

I am skeptical about this new find due to the fact that many other claims have been proven false or non existant. Since the 1850's there has been over 24 claims of the wreck site from now isolated inland lakes, to the mouth of the Niagara river, Detroit river, St. Clair River including the lake, to ...

Re: Still controversy on sinking of Edmund Fitzgerald

The only thing that makes the wreck controversial is the fact people keep the controversy alive, when there is nothing to go on. The Fitz is no different from other wrecks.
