Re: Old Photos Detroit waterfront

What was the 'Convict Ship'? Did it actually have to do with transporting convicts, or some sort of floating amusement attraction, or what?
Here is the advertisement that appeared in the Detroit newspapers in 1924 "explaining" the vessel and its notoriety:

Re: Old Photos Detroit waterfront

The Success sat at Detroit 9 June 1924-10 August 1924. On 4 August 1924 an advertisement in the Detroit Free Press breathlessly announced "When she sails she will never return." It reappeared at at the Belle Isle bridge in August 1927. I believe the photograph shows its 1924 visit, with th...

Re: Boatnerd Today in History Photo of the Bradley

The Carl D. Bradley was accompanied by a tug when it traversed the lock, and a photographer on the tug from Acme Newpictures took the photograph in question. Here is a view looking west showing the tug, which I have never been able to identify.

Re: sulphur cargoes

The modern preferred method is to heat the sulphur into a molten state that can be transported by pipeline, highway or rail tanker, or by water, generally barges fitted with tanks. The heated sulphur (around 300 degrees F) can stay molten in a sealed insulated container for days without needing heat...

Re: mantiwoc coal dock

Reiss provided retail coal to the Badger while Reiss still owned the land, but its function was primarily to serve the Manitowoc power plant. When the plant installed multi-fuel boilers Koch sold it to Manitowoc Public Utilities in 2015 since its coal needs had greatly decreased. One of the reasons ...

Re: Whaleback crew quarters

What is the structure in the middle of the deck on the South Park? A type of hatch crane, or something else? Thanks! Hatch crane! Ha! That is an elevator left over from when it ran in the automobile trade between Detroit and Cleveland for the Erie Steamship Company, so converted in the summer of 19...

Re: Whaleback crew quarters

The South Park encountered a violent storm on northern Lake Michigan on 17 November 1942, losing its rudder and funnel and being pushed from one side of the lake to the other, grounding north of Manistique. Roen released the vessel 23 November 1942 and the John Roen III towed it to Manitowoc for ass...

Re: Liberty Ship to Great Lakes Ore Carrier Proposal 1950

How about the former great lakes cruise ship Aquaria, I think she was once a liberty ship that was converted into a cruise ship.
I discus briefly the Aquarama in my post below. There were no Liberty (EC-2) ship conversions on the lakes.

Re: Liberty Ship to Great Lakes Ore Carrier Proposal 1950

To clarify, the post this afternoon discussing Leathem D. Smith and the various USMC designs used as conversions on the lakes was from me, not "Guest," and I don't know how why I was described as such, in response to an actual "Guest" invoking my name yesterday afternoon.

Re: Liberty Ship to Great Lakes Ore Carrier Proposal 1950

There were twenty-four Liberties, EC2-S-AW1, built as coal colliers that could have had appropriate hatch configuration for use in the ore trade. Delta Shipbuilding Company, in essence American Ship Building Company, built them March-September 1945 at the Delta yard at New Orleans. They were quite s...

Steelvendor was propelled by a six-cylinder single-acting, four-cycle McIntosh & Seymour Diesel, 22" x 32," constructed July 1923 at Auburn, New York, generating 750-bhp, as was its sister, Steelmotor. Two 90-bhp Diesels connected to 60kW generators provided power for the vessels' auxi...

The Indiana Harbor arrived at Ludington on 8 May 1984 to unload 45000 tons of limestone at Dow. It was to have been about 10000 tons more but there wasn't enough inventory on hand to accomplish that. On 6 May 1985 it delivered 51000 tons.

The Tom M. Girdler , first of the conversions to be completed, unloaded its maiden ore cargo at the Pennsylvania lakefront dock on 24 October 1951, and I think that is where the triplets continuously unloaded at Cleveland. Nicholson-Universal, Hutchinson, and other independents handled the Cuyahoga ...

Re: Lorain Ohio Coal Dock

That coal dock near the river mouth operated by the B & O originally used a Heyl & Patterson dumper, 20000 tons dumping capacity per ten hours, operated by the TL&FDCo. It was built during the winter and spring of 1910-1911. I believe in the mid-1960s it was converted to a hopper facilit...
