Re: Tugs Lake Superior and Essaysons

Im wondering if anybody has updates on the tugs Lake Superior and Essaysons. Both have been sitting by the salt dock in Duluth for years. Essayons sank at its dock (Duluth Timber Co. / old Great Lakes Storage & Contracting freight sheds) several years ago and has been sitting on the bottom ever...

Re: PRT

Reports from Duluth have her alongside at Port Terminal Berth 2 with her stern ballasted high out of the water, and floating work platforms around her stern, possibly leading from the dock out to the vicinity of her port-side rudder. These kind of repair stops typically last roughly 1-3 days, so tha...

Not sure a generalization can be made across the whole lakes shipping industry about whether it's a work environment that's friendly/secure, but there are likely pockets here and there where work experience would be notably positive or notably negative. A lot depends on the captain and crew, and sta...

It's been this way for several years now. Does not seem like there is any technical/machinery-related reason for it. If it was some kind of technical deficiency causing the long loads, the massively wealthy current owning company could have easily rectified it by now. Back in the 1990s / early 2000s...

Re: Duluth Lift Bridge Ride-along?

My question is, can the public pay to do this? (I think the answer is no, although I heard maybe they used to) or was it some type of VIP thing? Can the operator bring personal guests from time-to-time? There was a brief time in the 1970s when the public could pay a fare to ride the bridge for a li...

Roger, that would have been taken in Duluth in the Spring of 1980. The TMHS layup in the February 1980 issue of Scanner ( https://www.maritimehistoryofthegreatlakes.ca/documents/scanner/12/05/default.asp?ID=s006 ) shows the Governor Miller, William A. Irvin and Horace Johnson laidup in that city. A...

(moderators: you can merge this with my previously-submitted post if you like) A correction to the date estimate for Roger's photo - Governor Miller is reported by the Scanner, v. 13 n. 1 (October 1980) as being towed downbound at the Soo on 14th August 1980. Perhaps this photo is from mid-summer 19...

Awaiting the torch, not sure if this is Duluth or SUperior. That's Duluth. The old Berwind Fuel Co. Dock #2, immediately to the north of the Duluth-side approach to Burlington Northern's Grassy Point Draw swing bridge. By the time this picture was taken, the dock was listed on nautical charts as be...

Re: Ship speed

Might be important with this particular comparison to keep in mind that the Paul R. Tregurtha received new main engines in 2010, while Walter J. McCarthy Jr retains her original 1977-vintage main engines. In very general terms, the older a ship's propulsion system gets, the more likely it is that sh...

Try clearing your web browser's cache. Google your browser to find out how to clear it. If that doesn't work, use a different web browser. Good call. If memory serves, other folks have run into similar problems in the past as the original poster in this thread is describing, and doing some spring c...

CN and before that DM&IR both seem(ed) to prefer running significantly more annual iron ore pellet tonnage through the Two Harbors dock than the Duluth dock. Over the past few decades the Duluth dock has loaded roughly 4 - 7.5 million metric tons of iron ore pellets per season, while Two Harbors...

I definitely remember seeing a photo of two ships passing in the Duluth Ship Canal although I can't find it at the moment. If memory serves it dates to the 1930s or 1940s. Don't know how common a practice two-way traffic ever was at Duluth. Commercial ship visits to Duluth-Superior peaked at over 7,...

Re: Spliethoff Cleveland-Europe Express

After going up to Chicago last week, Nunalik visited Cleveland and is on her way to Valleyfield next. Cleveland and Valleyfield are two ports common to C.E.E. runs, so she could be on an unlisted / partial C.E.E. trip, though that depends on what her origin port was overseas.

Re: Bridge problem, Duluth

Indiana Harbor was already slow-belling across Lake Superior, killing time waiting for the Arthur M. Anderson to clear the loading berth at CN 6 in Duluth ahead of her. The loops were likely part of Indiana Harbors strategy, as she was getting close to Duluth and the Anderson wasn't finished loadin...

There appears to be a McInnis cement plant just east of Port Daniel. In recent years Midwest Energy has been loading petroleum coke from refineries in Minnesota and Montana onto ships bound for various cement plants around the Great Lakes/Seaway system. If recall is correct, the cement plants at Cha...

If it is in fact retired, could they be taking the ship to Sarnia to have all usable equipment removed before being sent to the breakers? Interesting possibility but it seems like an expensive voyage to make just for parts. Why not do it in Hamilton ? Keeping the move in-house means that they don't...

Not quite identical, so not a “sister ship” as it’s usually understood, but the Sykes & the Weir were definitely of similar design. Fair to say they were close cousins.
