Re: Fitzgerald Bradley Morrell Storms
Sorry to go off subject but, don’t forget about the 1913 storm as well. This storm was also unique in its own way and lasting longer than any storm and claiming more ships and lives than any other in history? While I’m not up on the details and the mb along with the wind and waves, by the time the ...

Re: Question About Ship That Sank
Great info Jared thanks, how deep is the water where the stern and bow are? If you have dived on this wreck what's your best guess do you think crew were still alive in the stern after the bow sank? What do you think happened, series of events, that caused the stern to sink some 5 miles away? Thank...

Re: Question About Ship That Sank
Was that the lifeboat that sits on the lake bottom next to the hull? How far away did the stern actually sink from the bow? Is it known was there crew alive in the stern section who tried to beach it? The stern sank 5 miles away from the bow. There is no hard evidence to prove that the crew tried t...

Re: Carl D. Bradley
I'd call the Bradley amongst the second generation of Self Unloaders. The prior unloaders (Wyndotte, Sylvan, Hennepin, Andaste, Bay City, Clifton, etc) were added after the vessel had been built. The Bradley was "one" of the first built with the self unloader designed into the hull. A good...

Re: Roger blough activity
In the 80s you still had to hire thru a hall and join either SIU or local 5000. There were some independent operators, mostly tugs but very few. I did ok but you couldn’t be picky and took your assignment. After my license it got easier. All in all it was a good career choice for me but now it’s pr...

Re: wave height buoys
How deep is the water where these wave buoys are located and how far from shore are they? Do all great lakes have them? Thank you in advance. The northern Lake Huron Buoy is about 200 yards off the wreck of the Monrovia in 170ft of water 16 miles off shore. The lower mid lake Buoy is in 240ft of wa...

Re: Lake Superior Storm Warning
I think the waves will top out a 22-25ft. I thought the 2014 gale or Sandy would bring about the legendary 35 footers so eagerly talked about in the storm of 1913. A rare 3-4 day blow might get them riled to that point.

Re: Norman P Clement
The Norman P. Clement was not the first acid tanker owned by Chembarge / Tank Truck Transport to be scuttled on the lakes. Chembarge No. 4 sprang a leak of acid into the bilges, and was scuttled on Lake Huron. On July 11, 1964 she was towed from Point Edward by the tugs Atomic, Aburg and Buoy Tende...

Re: Ryerson
Wouldn't a re-engined steamer need to meet the emission standards of today? No way the Blough's engines meet those without scrubbers. Why wouldn't CN Railway just keep the insurance settlement? Aren't they trying to get out of the shipping business? Maybe CN wants the cake and eat it also. They get...

Re: Norman P Clement
She was too volatile and contaminated to be scrapped. Her structural integrity was also a factor as she began to settle before making it to the predetermined trench. We have looked for her twice at the area stated by the news and CCG and she's not there. So we assume she's closer to Owen Sound.

Re: Roger Blough future
Nobody is sure. The fact that they hauled away the Ojibway and Manistee with the Crapo not much further along shows that GLF is hesitating to let it go.Mn bob wrote: ↑October 3, 2022, 10:30 am So the blough is for sure about 99 percent done and going to scrap or is nobody sure on that yet?

Re: Valor And Manistee
My mistake, I meant to say that the Valor had been bought by Lower Lakes, not Algoma. With the destruction of the Blough and St. Clair, there's a "potential" of a picked up route, tonnage, cargo, etc that could possibly benefit Interlake at the cost of GLF and Rand. Considering Rand has be...

Re: Valor And Manistee
It costs the companies very little overall. The dockage is free as it is owned outright for both the Valor and Sherwin. The Sherwin has lasted in layup because she's basically a "new" hull and can be refurbished cheaply as she's completely empty of engines and equipment. Even the pilothous...

Manistee was towed away for scrap in the spring. Valor is 40/60 of being repowered or scrapped.

I believe the first turbine ship to visit the great lakes was the Yacht Emerald in 1906 and the first one built actually on the lakes was the City of Cleveland between 1910-1911.

Re: Roger Blough future
I had a friend at the shipyard who's currently on the coast. When he left 2 months ago, GLF had not made a decision. And he said in his surprising experience with the Anderson, that you won't know what the decision is until a few weeks out with a call to Port Colburn. The engines were oiled and wrap...

Re: S.T. Crapo heading to Scrap
There was never any real discussions relating to the Crapo. For over 15 years there was a group up in MN who tried to purchase the JB Ford and had multiple fundraisers for it. They even tried to settle on saving the forward cabins and pilothouse only and that didn't even happen. LaFarge made one fin...
