Incident in the Duluth Entry ship canal

Yesterday, June 24 the Algoma Enterprise was heading for the Duluth Entry when a yacht broke down in the entry. The Algoma paused for a bit, and the Coast Guard came out and got the yacht out of the way, and followed the Algoma in with the yacht alongside, and towed it over to a nearby marina. See v...

Re: anyone know the story?

The newer picture I think is looking upriver in the Duluth-Superior harbor. In the background is the (now) CN oredocks, and the picture was taken on the Superior side just west of the (now gone) Wisconsin drawbridge tracks. What probably happened is that the rail-cars were pushed too far down the tr...

Re: La Pointe

I think The Madeline Island Ferry Line of Bayfield, WI purchased the La Pointe last fall from somewhere down in the Gulf Coast area. On this delivery trip it came up Lake Michigan, so supposedly it came up the Mississippi River.

They have 4 ferries in their fleet now, so this is number 5.

I see the Gott is in the Port Terminal slip in Duluth, with the stern sitting high. Some repairs maybe ?

Walter J McCarthy problem?

Looked at a video this morning on Duluthharborcam.com which shows the McCarthy being towed into Two Harbors by the G-Tug North Carolina. Did it have a breakdown of some sort?

Boats stuck in ice

This morning, with a stiff NE wind packing the ice in, there are 3 boats stuck just out of Duluth, the Mesabi Miner, the American Spirit, and the H Lee White. The USCG Alder is now heading out to get them moving.

Re: Kaye E. Barker

Here is a MarineTraffic plot of the Mackinaw breaking out the oredocks in Two Harbors. The 2 vessels shown there are the tug Nels J and the Kaye Barker which entered after the Mackinaw was done breaking ice.

Re: Kaye E. Barker

Interesting that the Mackinaw is breaking the ice out at the ore docks in Two Harbors, not just outside, but in where the boats go in to load. I thought there was a rule that says that the Coast Guard can't do this, but there evidently there are exceptions. Heritage has a tug there, but evidently it...

First through the Poe Lock

It was mentioned that the 3 icebreakers were the first through the Poe Lock this season. Actually the Tug Billmaier went through downbound earlier, probably to clear some ice out.

Tug Billmaier

Noticed today that MarineTraffic AIS shows the Tug Billmaier kicking around at the upper end of the MacArthur lock. Is it actually breaking up the ice there, or is it just the AIS signal being erratic?

Saltie Iver Bright

The Iver Bright is an Asphalt/Bitumen Tanker registered in the Netherlands. This saltie has been running between Detroit and Sarnia this winter. Curious why it would be doing this short run, rather than out in the ocean where you would expect it to be?

The ferry run to Madeline Island is now done for the season, and I think the ice road for cars and small trucks is now open. Here is a video from 2015 of the ice road.

Re: Madeline Island

Here are a couple of shots of the Island Queen ferry coming into Bayfield, and also backing into the dock on Madeline Island. You can see that the lake is well iced over, other than the path kept open by the Island Queen and also the Nichevo II, which has been running as well.
