As I remember it: The dock workers did not want to load Canadian boats and so USS shut her down. Same thing happened a few years later in Conneaut where the dock worker did not want to unload foreign vessels.

On January 19, 1963, DMIR announced the closure of the ore docks at Two Harbors due to declining iron ore shipments from that port over the previous 10 years.

It was detailed in the February 1963 issue of Telescope: https://images.maritimehistoryofthegrea ... 19611T.PDF

Iron ore shipments from Two Harbors resumed in 1966 and continues to this day.

CN and before that DM&IR both seem(ed) to prefer running significantly more annual iron ore pellet tonnage through the Two Harbors dock than the Duluth dock. Over the past few decades the Duluth dock has loaded roughly 4 - 7.5 million metric tons of iron ore pellets per season, while Two Harbors has loaded 12 - 17 million metric tons of iron ore pellets per season.

The only time in recent memory that this pattern flipped was in 1995, when DM&IR closed the rail line between the Iron Range and Two Harbors for maintenance for a considerable part of the year, during which period all iron ore pellet flow from DM&IR's customers was diverted through the Duluth dock.

I think Two Harbors has the export taconite going to the seaway for transhipment.

You're getting more Canadian traffic up here this year. Last year the Canadians loaded in Conneaut for Quebec City. This year Quebec City ore is being loaded up here.
