The Presque Isle did deliver at least one load of coal to DTE St. Clair back in the 1990s. If I recall correctly it unloaded in the hopper that is usually used by smaller ships.

Burns Harbor loaded a cargo of western coal at Superior, WI in November of 1998 or 1999 - a test load destined for the NIPSCO power plant at Burns Harbor, Indiana.

I can assure you all that I caught the American Spirit in April 2011 on one of those very rare coal trips. Sure enough she delivered that load to the DTE plant at St. Clair. No Split Load as the entire load was unloaded at DTE in St. Clair. However, it also took her more than the average time to unload of between 12-18 hours. The Spirt also did a few coal loads and trips too from the MERC Dock in Superior years ago and delivered them to the Power Plant at Silver Bay. They would sometimes unload coal there and then load out with pellets also at Silver Bay. Sorry as I don’t recall the exact year this was happening in? I’ve also caught her as well once carrying a very rare load of limestone from Calcite down to Ashtabula while on the St. Clair River. This was back I’d guess and say maybe in 2015? Hope that all of this information here helps you out.

The American Spirit is not optimized for carrying coal due to her lower cubic capacity compared to the other ASC 1,000 foot vessels.

The Spirit, when built as George A. Stinson in 1978, was built for the movement of iron ore pellets. As a result, she has two-conveyor belts below her cargo-hold and not three like her near-sisters, the James R. Barker Barker and Mesabi Miner.

Both the James R. Barker and Mesabi Miner have a coal capacity of 57,00 net tons. American Spirit's coal capacity is 50,900 net tons.

The other ASC footers were built in Sturgeon Bay and were a general design for the efficient movement of coal and iron ore. As such, they have a deeper hull depth (56-feet vs. the Spirit, Barker and Miner.

On occasion the American Spirit has handled coal.

All the asc footers seem to haul coal from merc in Superior except the American spirit. It’s seems like a very very rare occasion that the American spirit hauls coal is there a reason for this or is it just coincidence.
