As many have noted the new Mackinaw is not very reliable. I don't know how it compares to the old Mack. With Lake Carriers and others lobbying for another "heavy" icebreaker for the lakes ($550m price tag) I would much rather see them spend the same $ to build two Risley clones with Cat/Mak/GE diesels turning the propulsion and ships service generators. Put bow and stern thrusters in for DP and you will have great buoy tenders as well!Guest wrote:In terms of reliability, how does the new icebreaker Mackinaw compare with the retired Mackinaw? It seems like the newer vessel has had a series of issues since it entered service or is that just because such problems are more easily and quickly reported in the digital age? Although their numbers may be dwindling in regards to operational experience with the former icebreaker, but how do commercial mariners view the capabilities between the two vessels?

They made quick work of it for sure. Hopefully their issues are behind them and they have a successful spring breakout.

Mackinaw to the rescue in Northern Lake Michigan. Both ship’s on the move, plus the Katmai Bay.
Re: Cutter Mackinaw
I see the Mackinaw was moving out of river. Needed help with tug to get back to dock. Watching on Cheboygan Wedcam.

Somebody on Facebook said that it is a generator that's down.Jon Paul wrote:Any idea what's wrong with the Mackinaw? They have been at the State Dock all week and other ice breaking assets are being used to keep traffic moving thru the Straits.
