The broadcast of gull distress calls was tried at Granite Island Light years ago to no effect. Actually, it worked for about a day. Thereafter it actually served to attract the gulls as they are cannabalistic and came looking for a bird in distress to tear apart for a meal.

Should be no bird problem next year, they recently purchased an electronic device which plays gull distress calls.

Have you gone to their website? www.drlps.com you'll find articles and discussions about spending weekends as part of the lighthouse keeper program. Yes, it's hard work and lots of cleaning to be done, bird poop, spiders, etc.

Has anyone ever stayed at the Detour lighthouse. I'm thinking of giving it a try and would like some in-put. I understand that the birds can be quite a problem.

Thanks in advance,
