Charles M Beeghly rename

Charles M. Beeghly was not directly associated with Interlake Steamship. He was the CEO with Jones and Laughlin Steel Company (one of the Interlake clients).

...and Jones and Laughlin hasn't existed independently since 1984, and LTV, the company J&L became when it merged with Republic Steel, has also been consumed once or twice over since then. Given all that I suppose I understand why they chose the Beeghly as the one to be renamed. I'll still miss the sound of the old name and the new one will take a while to get used to, but as was mentioned above it's a lot more sensible and palatable than, say, the spate of names ASC chose for the Oglebay Norton boats.

Actually, the name "Pathfinder" has been associated with Pickands Mather/Interlake since 1892. Charles M. Beeghly was not directly associated with Interlake Steamship. He was the CEO with Jones and Laughlin Steel Company (one of the Interlake clients).

Look at it this way, at least the new name is still a person's name! Some boats are not that lucky, case in point- the American Spirit ex George A. Stinson. It'll always be the Stinson in my heart! :)

Interlake should have considered re-naming the Pathfinder in honor of him instead. Why take a person's name off of a boat in favor of another person when you have boats in your fleet that aren't named for people at all? They seem like better targets for a re-name in my opinion.

Why take anything away from Charles Milton Beeghly the person? Is he no longer important to the history of the company?

I'm in total agreement. The name change should reflect someone or somethng directly related to the industry. Oberstar was indirectly connected even though he did a lot of great things for the Lakes. On top of it all he's merely a politician.

Her AIS signal is already showing her new name. The AIS onboard was turned on sometime during the last couple of days.

According to the Duluth News-Tribune on March 8, the Beeghly has been renamed The Hon. James L Oberstar. He is a longtime congressman from Minnesota who was defeated in the last election after 19 consecutive terms. A formal christening ceremony is planned for late May in Duluth.
