Looking thru a couple of my old photo albums I found two photos of the Clarke I took in 1976 in Conneaut from the road opposite the coal dock. Above the huletts you can see the vents on top of the hulett building. So the building was there no later than 1976. I still think a hulett was rebuilt before I quit sailing or was in the process of being re-built.

I believe the Hullet building was built in the 1980's. It was there before I started working at P & C Dock.IDYK4

Unless I'm imagining my sailing career, I am 99% sure it was there when I sailed in the '70s. It was put in the same time that conveyor transfer system was built. Hope there's someone out there who sailed and went into Conneaut the same years I did who can tell me I haven't lost it completely.

I think I might be mistaken. The Hullet repair building was built in the late 70's. Inside there was a level to repair everything on the bucket leg.

I guess my memory is gone. What year was the refurbishing facility built? I know I did at least see that before I quit sailing.

I was working on the Hullet's at P & C Dock in Conneaut when they started the refurbishing project. We only started on the one machine. We had the upper portion off the base and were working on the base. Things were going great, and then one day in the middle of the shift, we were told to "button up" the work, the project has been cancelled. It was the end for the Hullets. A bunch of us were laid off shortly afterwards.

Well, friends, I guess I have to go digging in my shoebox that has the old pictures. I have some pictures of the John G. Munson loading ore in Conneaut in the spring in the middle 80s. They were short of ore in the lower lakes, may have been for either Lorain or Gary. One of the hullets had the unloading rig taken off of it and a conveyor installed. They were using the ore bridge to pick up from the stock pile and put on the conveyor. An interesting operation! Mike

Unless my memory is completely gone, but I thought in the mid-70s they actually did rebuild one of the huletts. We went in there a lot on the Clarke,71-78, and on the Watson in '79, I could be wrong, I have no proof of it, but I'm sure they did rebuild one of the rigs.

He also said that the base of the hulett that they started to refurbish, they tried to convert it to a ship loader. I don't remember all of the details of whether it was to load ore or coal, or if they ever actually used it. I think this was all scrapped in 1997.

The dock supervisor took me out on the dock so I could get pictures of the huletts. He said that they had planned to refurbish all of the huletts, but only got started on the one.

The shot in Historical Perspectives of Hillman under the Huletts is at the B+LE dock in Conneaut. As far as I know, Conneaut was the only port with 5 Hulettts. You can also make out the B+LE logo on the cars.

At one time, there was a set of elevated trestles and an elevated turntable to move the trolleys off the bridges to a repair building. I have only seen one picture of this, in an Arcadia book. Anybody have more on this?
