The Aune Osborn city campground is alive & well on the river, down stream of the power canal dam, up stream of the Sugar Island Ferry. We're heading up there in a couple weeks for a few days of boat watching.

Thanks for the info! I will definitely check it out next time I am there. I live in Massachusetts now, but still come back to the UP at least once a year. The campground was a wonderful place for boatwatching. I vividly remember walking up in the middle of the night when a boat would go by and being out swimming when the big waves would come off a passing freighter. Great fun!

If you feel like making a stop out there, take E. Portage Ave. downriver from the locks, head toward Clyde's Drive In where the Sugar Island ferry is. Stay on the road, Portage Ave. becomes Riverside Drive. Keep on Riverside for a few miles or so. Next you come to a curve, with somewhat of a fork, where Riverside goes right and S. Nicolet Rd is straight ahead. Go onto Nicolet Rd a short distance and you ought to see the public access and the old campground area to the left.

Hi Garrett, the campground no longer exists. In the mid '90s it was closed, sold off in parcels and some homes have been built there since. A public access with parking is at the upriver side of the old campground property. It sure was a great spot to watch the boats, especially back when there were a lot of them.

Nicolet Campground

Sorry if this has been covered previously on the board, but I couldn't find anything by searching. Growing up in the 1980s, my family spent a few weeks each summer camping at Nicolet Camground in Sault Ste. Marie. I can't remember where exactly it was. Does anybody remember the place and have any information on it?
