"... - this turns out to be 1014 feet. Imagine a cube of taconite that is that long and wide, and extends that high into the sky!"

So this cube is 12" longer than the length of the Paul R. Tregurtha?

Taconite pellets have a bulk density of approximately 129 pounds per cubic foot (this takes into account spaces in between individual pellets, hence the term bulk density). To figure out the volume of 60,000,000 tons, we multiply that amount by 2240 (pounds in a long ton) to get weight in pounds - this turns out to be 134,400,000,000 (that's 134.4 billion) pounds. Divide this by the density above to get a volume of 1,041,860,465 (that's 1.04 billion) cubic feet. Take the cube root of this to get the length of a cube that would equal this volume - this turns out to be 1014 feet. Imagine a cube of taconite that is that long and wide, and extends that high into the sky!

Taconite is shipped in pellet form which are essentially spheres. When piled, there is space between them so you can't simply translate the weight of solid taconite to get an idea of what the volume of 60 million tons of pellets looks like. Also, pellets are concentrated to about 60% iron and often have flux stone added. So again, you can't simply translate the density of taconite into a volume of pellets.

175 lbs / cubic foot; 4725 lbs / cubic yard

My math is horrible, but...

If a solid cubic yard of taconite weighs 2.14 tonnes (4724lbs), then the cube would be 3 million yards on each side?

What does a cubic yard of taconite weigh?

Trying to figure out what a 60 million ton (volume that went thru the locks this year) cube of taconite would look like.

Thanx !
