M/V American Republic
After working/sailing on more than 2 dozen GL boats, she has the best lines of any rear ender and her steering compartment is truly unique. Under one of her captains, she should make the Cuyahoga in 1 1/2. No other boat could come close to this.

Boyer would be Col. James M. Schoonmaker in Shenango livery. Charles M. Beeghly was the Shenango II.

As far as favorites, hands down Detroit's "Speed Queens," the Browning/Nicholson-Universal Republic C-4s, especially in the Republic colors with the hull stripes and billboard lettering. Troy H. Browning/Thomas F. Patton and Charles M. White are particular favorites because of family who sailed on them.

The Risley because I got on her when she was breaking ice in Goderich harbour in 2008 and the Griffon because about 2 weeks ago I built a model of her and so we got a tour on board. and the canyon because she was the first laker I ever saw back in 2001.

Hands down, the Queen of the Great Lakes Fleet, the Grand Old Lady and at 104 years old. of course the Medusa, Southdown, Saint Mary's Challenger.

Hmm, I can understand where you are coming from. I probably have seen her many times under her earlier names, since I grew up in the south suburbs and when we went to Chicago, we always drove past the south end of Calumet Harbor. Besides, a ship that is much older than me, still in full service is truly a special ship.

Back in the early 1970s, my parents brought home a series of educational children's books called The Child's World dating from the mid to late 1960s. My favorite volume was called The World and Its Wonders; one page featured a photo of a ship that, I recall, fascinated me. I was just seven or eight at the time, and I didn't remember much else, but I remembered that photo.

Fast forward several decades. I've discovered my inner boatnerd and, and thanks to the magic of eBay, I've reacquired that long-lost volume and finally learned that ship's name.
