When we went from ore, coal,or anything other then grain before loading of the grain started an inspector came onboard and we went down into the tunnel, cargo holds he wore white gloves and used to rub them on anything that the grain was goin to touch and if his gloves got dirty he would make us go out and clean everything again until he was satisfied that it was clean, but also I’ve been on ships that had piles of coal on the ship sides and loaded grain right on top of it

Not much grain to ore. Ore to grain? When you're done cleaning you can eat off the deck.

Unrelated topic...what is the cleaning procedure for a freighter to haul pellets after discharging grain? Vice versa? How long is the turnover?

Thanks Roger as you’re correct and right on that as I recall reading that story and article. So, I wonder then how shipments of grain will be as far as from Duluth goes? I suppose probably the same thing as what is taking place in Thunder Bay? That would maybe explain too why we’re seeing more grain haulers like G3 Marquis, CSL Welland along with the new Captain Henry Jackman carrying more ore loads out right now than grain. Take the Jackman for instance. So far they’ve only done one trip from Thunder Bay with grain. Two other trips were with ore both from Lake Superior Ports, Superior and now Silver Bay. Saw the Welland in Port Huron yesterday and they’re heading up to Two Harbors for ore and NOT to Thunder Bay for grain. May not see too many Salties then in here for the Canadian Fall Harvest this year? We’ll have to wait and see.

Recent story on the news page reported that Canada's fall harvest won't be as good as last year due to drought in the west

Usually I’d say during the months of September and October as those are a few of the big months for grain shipments during the Grain Rush period in the Fall. Also, November can be a very busy month as well with lots of grain shipments. Generally, the Seaway shuts down about the end of the year in December. So, all Salties need to be out of the system by the end of December as that’s when the Seaway closes for the year. The Welland has stayed open though a bit later in recent years about a week after the Seaway shuts down. Hope that this helps and answers your questions.

When do we typically start seeing increased grain shipments from the Canadian harvest?
