The U.S. Coast Guard defines a cutter as a named vessel over 65' long, with messing and berthing facilities for a permanently assigned crew. USCG boats are vessels less than 100' long. USCG boats less than 65' long are generally assigned to USCG Shore Stations and will have the stations name on the stern along with the boat number. USCG Cutters will have their name on the stern.

Ship Nomenclature

Unread post by paulbeesley »

Permit me, old fogey that I am becoming, to comment on nomenclature for Coast Guard vessels.

US Coast Guard vessels are usually referred to as "Cutter", as in United States Coast Guard Cutter Oak. USCGC

Canadian Coast Guard vessels are mostly referred to a "Ship", as in Canadian Coast Guard Ship Griffon. CCGS

In the Canadian Coast Guard "Cutter" usually refers to smaller vessels such as the 47 foot Search & Rescue Cutters, which are the same design as the USCG 47 foot SAR Cutters.

Thank you.
