Marquis Roen and Fred. W. Green towed the hull of Georgia to Summer Island 13 June 1932. The schooner barge Alice B. Norris followed later that week. Georgia had been sitting off the Sturgeon Bay Shipbuilding & Drydock Company yard since 1926, the Norris since 1924, both in sunken and derelict states. On 24 July 1932 Fred W. Green towed the remains of Nyack to Summer island . The laid up schooner-barge Robert L. Fryer burned that day at Sturgeon Bay and it, too, brought to Summer island the next week. The self-unloading barge Adriatic was rumored to be next, but as we know that never happened.

I don't suppose there's a board member who might know the hulls that were used?

From what I've read, they used Goodrich Transportation's SS Georgia (formerly City of Ludington), the Crosby Line steamer "Nyack", and the Robert L Fryer.

Thanks! I spotted them in Summer Harbor. There is a submerged remainder of jetty at the southern end of Summer Harbor clearly visible in the 2013 satellite photo in which the outlines of at least three hulls are visible with a possible fourth buried within the structure of the pier or whatever it is. The area seems like it would be treacherous to navigate in a large vessel.

As far as I have been able to ascertain over the years, off South Detour Point, which would be the notheast quadrant of Big Summer island. My hunch is the site is close to the unofficially named bay known as "Summer Harbor." The quarry, of course, proved a disaster, and was in operation for only a few months in 1932 until the Coast Guard prohibited the use for harbor construction of the rip rap being mined about a thousand feet from shore because of weathering cracks in the mined material which would not hold up under freeze-thaw conditions. I assume all four hulls are still there, filled with stone. Lyons and Roen dismantled what was left of it in 1935.

I'm trying to locate the wrecks used as break walls at Summer Island in Lake Michigan using Google Earth. Can anyone tell me approximately where on the island the port facilities were?
