We never hosed the deck We had sprinklers made by the engine department A piece of pipe with holes drilled in it and capped off at one end The other end threaded onto a deck hose and they had a base welded to the pipe We placed them on hatches to cool the deck so that heat expansion wouldn’t make the ship over draught in the canal or seaway
Did anyone see that bridge in Chicago that expanded and couldn’t close There was a fire boat spraying water on it

It's more common with boats going through the Welland and St Lawrence Seaway due to the deck hogging in hot weather and the restricted water depths

Do deck crews still use cold lake water to hose the spar deck during hot weather conditions? I recall reading deck crews using water on hatch covers and deck strapping on older boats to cool the steel.
