The survivors of the Mataafa incident were R. F. Humble (Captain), Harry Larson (deckhand), Louis Yakes (deckhand), Leon "Lee" Yates (deckhand), Charles Byrne (fireman), Edward Coulter (fireman), Wallace "Wally" Brown (First Mate), Herbert Emigh (Second Mate), Thomas McCloud, James Hatch (Wheelsman), Axel Carlson, Fred Saunders (porter), Grantley West (Watchman), Earnest Dietz (Watchman) and George McClure (Wheelsman).
The fatalities included Henry Wright (Chief Cook), Thomas Woodgore (fireman), Claude Farringer (First Assistant), WIlliam Most (Chief Engineer), W. GIlchrist (Oiler), Carl Carlson (Oiler), Walter Bush (Second Cook), James Suttle, and James Early.
