As I always understood it, a Growler* is a large section of ice that is mostly submerged except for a small part above or at the waterline. The bulbous bow is designed to initially break the water's resistance when a ship is underway. This takes less horsepower to move the vessel at service speed and saves fuel.
* As micro-brewery afficionado's know, a "Growler" is also a 1 gallon glass jug in which you can take your favorite libation home!

Re: Federal Kushiro
The bulbous part of the bow was crushed in eight feet. The new one is under construction, and whole project was expected at two weeks last I heard.

She encountered a growler at the entrance of Belle-Isle Strait of her way from Europe and suffered a broken nose.

The Federal Kushiro arrived at Bay Ship late afternoon and was tied up on out the face.

Anybody know how she crushed her bow in? I see she is heading down Green Bay for Sturgeon Bay this morning.
