I forgot to add in my earlier post another one of my all-time
favorite lakers was Seaway Queen. In Oct. 1999 I was fortunate
enough to get aboard her thanks to the Capt. and her crew as we
were tied-up below Lock 1 waiting on the Algowood to come out.
We then sailed into Lock 1 where I got off of her. That was a
thrill and an experience I'll never forget. BTW, the Queen's Capt.
at that time said "he was youngest master on the lakes then!"
His nickname was "Jake the Snake!" Anyone remember him and
knows what he is doing today? Thanks for any replies & updates.

The Crapo, I was on her last voyage when the strike happened as a temp. wiper. Great crew, partied hardy, but devoted.

Here's my top 10 in no particular order:

I was on her in 1971 & 72, talk about ship shape! That wasn't a boat to most of that crew, it was their home.

Living near our states capital, I must say any and all boats that I get to see are my favorites.

It was boat heavy at the Soo last week, wife and I were estactic.

Even got to see the Presque Ille round Whitefish Point.

Cason J. Callaway! Cleanest, most organized ship I have ever been on; as well as pretty to see pulling into port.

I think those Republic boats are cool too.

I guess there's too many to mention, but then I'm kind of like a kid in a candy shop when I see one. It's sort of like fishing for me... I'm just happy if one bites my hook. LOL

I couldn't agree with you more on your comments about
"the more ships on the Great Lakes the better!" Last year (2009)
was a terrible year for ship traffic on the Great Lakes as I only
had one day maybe two days where I saw 10 or more ships in a
days time on the rivers. This year (2010) I have had many days
where I have seen 12 or more ships on the river in a days time.
Let's hope things are starting to improve for everyone in 2010.

Being a true blue boatnerd great lakes
shipping enthusiast, I have a plethora
of favorites,it would be difficult naming
just a few, the more freighters on the
Great Lakes, the better.
