If the nichipicoten does go to Erie to the shipyard she will have to be towed i cant see her being sailed on her own power. If she fails inspection port colborne is just across the lake.

Interesting = spending that much money for another drydocking. They seem to have met their customers needs this season with her and the Cuyahoga out of service for most of the year.

So this will be adding to their carrying capacity just when one more customer is gone - Algoma Steel fires up their EAF in the spring. (Unless they'll haul DRI if that new plant is going to use that feedstock).

So either they are going to try to grab business from some other Canadian company or they will layup some other boat. IMO.

I have heard that the Cuyahoga is done for, too much damage from the fire to warrant repairs to such an old vessel. Next stop for her will be the scrapyard.

Michipicoten Im sure will sail again, as said before in these forums she is due for inspections this year anyway and I believe the owners have taken the time to get everything sorted out aboard before they allow inspectors back aboard. She'll be back out next season.

Erie is closer to Port Colborne; which will be her final destination.

It is confusing - does Erie charge the much less than Fraser than to have her sit idle for a couple of months and then deadhead to Erie?
Were the dry-docks in both Eire and Fraser occupied for the last two months otherwise why wouldn't you have taken advantage of the warmer weather and higher productivity that allows?

So permanent repairs have not been done.
Assume Fraser has winter layup work already booked, so that would be reason for Michipicoten to head to Erie for drydock and potential permanent repairs.
She was temporarily repaired at Thunder Bay and made the trip to Duluth under her own power with a tug escort all the way. She was drydocked in Superior, at Fraser Shipyards, where permanent repairs were made to the crack and associated framing. A slew of other non-compliance issues were also addressed at that time but she was operating on an extension to her 5 year (as well as a few other required surveys) when the stress crack opened up. There are other surveys coming due in Spring of 2025. As I understand it, even with the drydocking in Superior, Transport Canada wouldn't allow a continuance of the 1 year extension without a full drydocking survey (as well as the other overdue surveys) and satisfactory completion of the findings from them. She will likely be heading to Erie for those outstanding surveys and any work that arrises from the findings. Her fate will likely be decided after those surveys are completed and a price tag attached to the work. My $0.02.

Is it possible she's waiting for the bill to be paid?

I don't believe that you understand the extent of deteriation of her keelsons, floors and stringers as well as her hull plates. All of this considered, who in their right mind would sign off on this vessel in herpresent condition.
Frasier Shipyard confirmed publicly weeks ago that the necessary repairs were done.

Even ignoring that, there's simply no sense sense to state that they installed "temporary light plating". She was made watertight for the tow there in the first place. You don't replace a temporary repair with another temporary repair nor would penny pinching Lower Lakes pay to just have her sit idle in an expensive drydock for several weeks just to ultimately not do the repair work that she was there for.

Permanent repairs were performed on the bottom plating. There wasn’t any temporary light plating.

She came into Superior under her own power. Given that the crack has been repaired, it’s fully conceivable that she will leave under her own power if she’s headed to Erie for her five-year inspection.

Anyone have any further news, reports along with updates and status on the Cuyahoga and Michipicoten?
Cuyahoga is rumored to be going to the scrap heap.
