These three rivers are not in the same general area. The Saint Joseph is located in the southern part of Michigan and drains mostly farmland into Lake Michigan. The Clinton river starts in Pontiac Michigan, discharges into north western Lake Saint Clair and drains mainly rural areas. The Rouge river is located just south of Detroit and drains into the Detroit river. I would not recommend that anyone drink out of these rivers - let alone go swimming in these rivers. I hope this helps Darryl with the location and understanding of these rivers.

A very interesting article from the Detroit News today ( 7/31/2016.

The Clinton, Rouge and St. Joseph rivers top the list with the highest number of organic waste compounds found in water sampling USGS conducted throughout the Great Lakes basin in five states over four years, from 2010 to 2013. The amount of the pollutants also was disturbing — both the Clinton and Rouge rivers had five organic waste compounds related to incomplete fossil fuel burning, such as car exhaust and coal-fired power plants, that were 10 times higher than water-quality benchmarks.
