Interlake Steamship saltwater conversion 1980s

Back in the early 1980s I recall some rumors of the Interlake Steamship Company planning a conversion of a saltwater vessel for Great Lakes service. I believe that it was to involve one of the ships belonging to the Moore McCormick Lines that owned Interlake at the time. Obviously, this idea was shelved and never went forward. Does anyone have any further information on this project?
