Cliffs knew what they had, when the conversion was made to the Cliffs Victory, a very fast boat, that could make more runs in a season than their other vessels in their fleet at that time, all things being equal.
According to the records from 1953 the Cliffs Victory was listed as a
"Lakefront Ship", as were their other large boats.
Those classified as "Upriver Ships were those such as the Michigan, Ishpeming, Joliet and etc.

I over heard a couple of old time sailors who knew the Cliffs Victory!,and they said it had a under sized rudder!,if it did run rivers it would have needed a lot of tug help? has anyone else ever heard this about the Cliffs Victory? thank you mn brett

I think I remember seeing her tied up across from G&W welding at collision bend during fit out in 1957.

When the Cliffs Victory first entered service on the Great Lakes in 1951 at its original 620 foot length, did it ever transit the Cuyahoga River at Cleveland? I know it regularly unloaded at that port, which I believe was the destination of its maiden voyage for Cleveland Cliffs.
