Back in the 80’s and 90’s, the GLF AAA’s would deliver coal to a dollar Bay.

I use the waterway in 1997 with the Mapleglen nice trip but white out most of the way. I was in ballast cleared the bridge by 6 feet.

typically, the only ships using the waterway these days are the Ranger III, the ocasional tugboat with a barge, and the salt boats that visit in the fall

I believe they have 100 feet of air draft on the Houghton / Hancock lift bridge

It is used, but not often. The largest boat to have used it is the Lee A. Tregurtha.

Not sure how often and when but, Yes I’ve heard and read that ships do use the Keweenaw Waterway sometimes. Maybe they use it more in the fall to take shelter during fall gales and storms? Surely someone will know more on this subject than I do. Hope this information helps.

It looks like something I would love to kayak and ship watch - unlike the St. Clair where I prefer to be on shore. The current is too dangerous for the kayak.
