It was formerly the Port Aransas ferry B.L. DeBerry. It spent the winter at Bay Shipbuilding, where it appears new cabins and a new pilothouse were constructed.

The La Pointe is the former B. L. Deberry, built 1987 at New Orleans by Halter Marine Group, Inc., hull number 1131, for the State of Texas Ferry Operations Department, Port Aransas, Texas. 90.7 x 44 x 9.1; 94 gt, 64 nt. I believe it has twin Detroit Diesels, but I'm not certain.

I think The Madeline Island Ferry Line of Bayfield, WI purchased the La Pointe last fall from somewhere down in the Gulf Coast area. On this delivery trip it came up Lake Michigan, so supposedly it came up the Mississippi River.

They have 4 ferries in their fleet now, so this is number 5.
