Thanks for sharing the info and link to the Michigan Tech explanation as well.
I spotted one of these off St. Ignace a few days ago and was surprised to see something standing so tall out of the water without being part of an ice pressure ridge. It was just a large solo chunk, drifting along, and I was thinking about how large the submerged portion had to be to support something standing that tall.

Looks to be the remains of an Ice Foot. It forms from the build-up of slush and spray with a strong on-shore wind.

Wow those are pretty incredible. I live up by Lake Superior and we certainly don't have anything like that by us. Do you know what creates them?
