I was able to view it with no issues, and I certainly don't have a subscription. Perhaps its one of those sites where you can only access it so many times per month free. Or maybe I just got lucky with my old browser.

During its operation the railroad twice suffered run-away ore trains with resulting derailment on the dock property, usually with spectacular results .

If I remember correctly an oversize truck hit the overpass and they had to take it down for safety reasons. But it wasn't intentional.

Was by there yesterday for the first time in some years and noticed one of the railroad approaches over highway 61 has been severed. How long ago that happen? Strange that only one was and not the other two.

The Republic mine in Michigan was allowed to fill with water and the remaining land is being re-claimed. Some parts are planted with trees, while other parts were left open. But all buildings and foundations will eventually be removed.

As for property taxes, I assume they would still be charged on the property. But the big mining taxes, at least in Minnesota, are on production (by the ton) so those tax revenues go away.

When they close down a mine like that, what happens to the big hole in the ground? Do they reforest the land, are taxes still assessed?

LTV Steel announced the closing of the Hoyt Lakes mines on May 24, 2000, and while it was planned to shut down operations in mid-2001, the filing for bankruptcy by LTV Steel on December 29, 2000 hastened the shutdown.

By that time, the Hoyt Lakes mine was nearing exhaustion of economically recoverable taconite. The taconite plant also required a major upgrade to its equipment.

Charles M. Beeghly (now James L. Oberstar) arrived at Taconite Harbor on August 21, 2001 and loaded the last of the iron ore pellets at the dock. She didn't receive a full load and topped-off at Silver Bay for the balance of her cargo.

Photos of the construction of the Hoyt Lakes taconite plant and the dock at Taconite Harbor can be found at the Minnesota Historical Society website: https://search.mnhs.org/index.php?brand ... rie+mining

Separate. About 25 miles apart. Taconite Harbor closed in late 1980s?

I'm confused, I see a ship loader in Taconite Harbor. Is it the same as Silver Bay or are they separate locations?
