That is my fault apparently. Someone asked two days ago which vessel was the last hand bomber on the Lakes and I responded, linking to a 10 year old post on the same subject. Now people are replying to both posts.

There is a way for moderators to combine posts, but the results tend to be a scramble of posts that are difficult to comprehend.

90% of the questions asked here have already been discussed at some point in time, but few bother to search the archives. The existing search engine doesn't help matters when it throws out so many "common" words.

That is incorrect. The Crapo had stokers installed, apparently in 1962.

This site's Fleet Photo Gallery lists ILM's S.T. Crapo as "the last hand-fired coal burner on the Lakes" until her conversion to oil during the 1994/95 winter layup.

Last operating hand-bomber was the Chief Wawatam, 1984.

I believe the tug Q.A. Gillmore is still around with a steam plant that has the potential to be restored to operating condition.
