The only route she'd take a grain cargo to would have been down the Seaway to one of the Lower St. Lawrence ports, such as Baie Comeau, Port Cartier, etc. Perhaps she had carried a grain cargo, but I've never seen documentation, newspaper reports or photos of the Edmund Fitzgerald carrying grain down the Seaway.
