After Castro took over Cuba, ferry service from Florida ended. The Grand Haven was sold and came back thru the St Lawrence to run steel coils from Cleveland to Port Burwell and Port Stanley in 1965. Due to issues in Canada she only made a few trips and was laid up, eventually being sold for scrap in 1969. She was flagged in Honduras for both her Cuba service and final lake service.

The photo is of the original Grand Trunk ferry 'Grand Haven'. It shows her with an altered pilothouse; the original was removed when she was moved off the lakes. She had spent the better part of the 1930s laid up before she was sold for off lake use. She departed the lakes via Chicago SHip & Sanitation Canal, and taken down the Mississippi, in much the same way the Manitowoc-built subs were moved down that way during WWII.

That picture is of the original Grand Haven having been somewhat modified for the Port of Palm Beach-Havana run. She was originally built for service on Lake Michigan between Grand Haven and Milwaukee then sold to the West India Fruit and Steamship Company...I believe.

todays boatnerd {jan 23rd) it has a photo of the ss grand haven. where was this photo taken? im guessing port colborne. i believe she was under a foreign flag at this time. question is, was she required to carry a pilot at all times? there also a ss new grand haven which carried rail cars between florida and cuba. it ended up under the canadian flag as the ss patrick morris operated by cn marine on the east coas. in 1970 she foundered in heavy seas while anserwering a mayday calll in 1970. the captain, chief enginer 2nd and 3rd engineer all went down with the ship. 51 were rescued by the mv rhure ore which eventually became a laker owned by hall corp. csl,s cedar glen was a sister ship.
