the spartan cut dowb to a barge would likily be able to carry 5,000 tons, to compete with purvis or mckeil something in the 10,000 ton is needed. im sure on the west coast a "used" barge could be bought at a reasonable cost. after all both mckeil and purvis bought "used" on the west coast, not a used ferry tied up for nearly 50 years.

The Spartan was stripped of parts several years ago with useful components warehoused for future use on the Badger. That they're still hanging on to her suggests a future past that as scrap fodder.

Even though the accommodations and such have apparently suffered greatly from years of lay up from rain and snow, she wouldn't be coming back as a ferry and all that would be scrapped anyways. The soundness of her hull is what's important and with how well built she was and sitting in fresh water, I rather doubt that she's suffered much in the areas that matter and is still quite viable.

Why wouldn’t it make sense for them to buy that tug? Why assume its only purpose would be for the Spartan? Perhaps they have a totally different purpose for it in the future. Maybe they just bought it because it was available at a good price to hang onto while looking at different scenarios. Interlake is a profitable family owned company in a world of corporate giants. They survive due to innovative thinking.

Jared wrote: March 22, 2023, 1:29 am It was discussed about last year around this time in a old thread. But the Spartan is in bad shape and is likely heading to the scrappers down the line. She's just used for whatever spare parts are left. The deck is completely rotted out and lots of water and moisture abound in the hull. Mr. Lafferty was on it some time ago and wrote in a post how bad she is.

Odd because everything I've heard from people keeping tabs on her is that she has been preserved in pretty good condition. It also wouldn't make any sense for Interlake to buy that tug if the Spartan is to be scrapped.

probably means the spartan not the badger. there has to be a reason for interlakes logictics to buy the tug that is in ludington right now, even if they got a real deal on it

I'm curious as well.....they do have a pretty good-sized tug tied up to the Spartan with no intended use mentioned--that I am aware of. Maybe the Undaunted will be replaced ?? Are you asking about the Spartan or the Badger......
