Normally when a ship is towed overseas for scrap, it gets a ‘scrap name’, usually consisting of painting over existing letters in the name to save time/effort/etc.
Not so with Atlantic Erie - she was renamed “Spirit of Shpongle” for her trip to the Turkish breakers. As best I can tell, the word “Shpongle” has only ever been used as the name of an electronic band. Does anybody know the scoop behind this weird name change?
