New ships were built into the 1950s with telescoping hatches. Detroit Edison McKee sons Adam e cornileus the Saginaw was originally the John j Boland and a few others can’t recall. Complete pain in the |. There were always deck jobs available after sept. 15 as guys left the hatch farms for tarp season.

Wedges, Battens, strong backs, and tarps all part of the telescoping hatch nomenclature. Lots of bending over and long hours. Especially on a hatch farm - 12-foot centers.....

The Saginaw has telescoping hatch covers. They were very common near the turn of the century to the late 1920s. I think her and the Mckee Sons are the last afloat with these hatches.

I just watched a video of the Saginaw unloading and noticed the hatch covers are in two halfs . It looks like they slide on top of each other on each side of the hatch opening. Just wondering if these where on other ships of the day. Also would they have to be tarped any experts.
