No, we're talking about the removal of the existing sidetanks, replacing with newly-built sidetanks, along with a new tanktop section to account for the extra width. But how much was replaced depended on the vessel. Cutting down the middle would be far too cumbersome and unstable to do. Some widenings, such as the John D. Leitch and CSL Tadoussac's required new tanktops due to wastage and wear.

the tadousac was widened in 2000 at port weller drydocks, not toledo, and renamed csl tadousac. her hull was repainted grey..at one time CSL has 3 different hull colours. iron ore red for straight deckers and package freighters, black for selfunloaders and grey for cement carriers. the stacks were all CSL colours, red botom, white middle and black top, not like the upside down hockey sticks today!

TADERSACKS referenced below should be TADOUSSAC, now CSL TADOUSSAC.

I stand firmly corrected Guest in that the TADERSAK had her widening done at PWDD in the early 2000’s, ( side tanks and C.H.’s modified and widened 1.5ft. for added cargo carrying capacity. It was shortly thereafter that I observed her in the TSR D/D undergoing her 5 yr sight and survey. She truly has an interesting history from her launching onward.

It depends on the individual vessel as to how extensive work was needed when they were widened.

For example, the Tim S. Dool, when it was the Senneville back in 1989 required new tank-tops as they were prematurely worn out due to the trade she was in. By the mid-1990s, she required new sidetanks due to the amount of wastage in the ballast tanks. When she was widened at Port Weller, they added a new section of tanktop when the new sidetanks were installed to account for the increased width.

John D. Leitch had new tanktops, sidetanks and a new conveyor system in the cargoholds to replace the existing structure when she was widened.

I'm not sure how extensive the Atlantic Huron and Tadoussac's widenings were. Undoubtedly the side tanks required replacement in both vessels, but the extent of tanktop replacement was more likely in the Tadoussac - but her existing inclined-belt system remained.

I know the Tadoussac's widening was for extra cargo. Same with the Leitch and Dool. They were midlife refits to get as much out of these boats as possible before they get sent to the scrapyard

When the Canadian vessels that were widened between the 1990s and early 2000s (Tim S. Dool, John D. Leitch, Atlantic Huron, Tadoussac) did these rebuildings involve only extending the ballast tanks to increase buoyancy and thereby increase cargo capacity, or were the cargo holds reconfigured as well?
