In late 2008, I exchanged several correspondences with ULS concerning the company's plan to repower the James Norris for a book project I was working on. The ship was intended to be repowered by a pair of MaK Type 6M25 diesel engines. The Norris did receive some propeller work during the 2008-2009 winter layup but changing economic conditions during late 2008 and early 2009 prevented ULS from going ahead with the project. This was the official word given to me by the company at the time, which was only a few years before the fleet was sold to Algoma. I have no idea as to what happened to the diesel engines that I would tend to believe would have either been already obtained or on order at the time that the project was abandoned.

The James Norris lasted until near the end of the 2011 shipping season while still being powered by its original Vicker's built Unaflow engine. I took this picture of the Norris as it passed downbound at Port Huron, Michigan, for the final time on December 3, 2011. Not the best photograph of this ship but one of the last of it as an active carrier before it arrived at the scrapyard in Port Colborne just three days later.

Speaking of whatever happened to, whatever became of the new engine for the James Norris which was never installed? What make and model was it?

Hi all
The Comeaudoc engine was an MAK type 601m diesel not a MAN . Same type as Paterson.

your correct about the cuyahoga having a caterpillar diesel engine. in fact it was brand new. the used MAN diesel engine from the comeau was bought from the scrappers in port colborne to be installed in the saginaw when her steam plant was removed, but it wouldnt fit. i believe LLT bought a new MAN {that would fit1" from germany. had it shipped to montreall and put on a railway car and taken to the cargil dock on exmouth street in sarnia. some one posted on boatnerd a photo of the railroad car and new engine at paris jct on the CNR main line to sarnia. i assume the train was stopped for a red signal. and yes MAN now adays is owned by CAT. perhaps boatnered has the photo in their archives.

As I understand, the engine in the Comeaudoc, was a fairly new Caterpillar diesel that LLT purchased and used it to repower the Cuyahoga.
I may be wrong, but this is what I remember hearing at the time in the early 2000's

I second that. Seems like an awful oversight that such a mistake would be made unless there was something overlooked when the initial survey of the vessel's internal arrangement and the engine was made. Seems like such an examination in relation to size would be a relatively basic exercise. Could this just be a rumor and there was actually another reason the engine was not used?

I heard that the engine was purchased by Lower Lakes Towing for repowering the Saginaw, but would not fit.
